[lbo-talk] Query on Romney Care

In the Massachusetts scheme is everyone required to buy insurance or are those who have sufficient funds allowed to prove that they can pay for their own medical expenses. I recall that at one point in a discussion Romney said that people should either have insurance or be able to pay their own way. This would avoid what he calls the present socialist system in which if people show up at emergencies without insurance or money they get free taxpayer paid care. Is there actually the choice of not buying insurance in the system for some?     If everyone is required to have insurance then Romney care on this issue is the same as Obamacare--but at the state level.. Romney care involves subsidies for those who cannot afford to buy insurance under the present system. For the Santorums of this world no doubt that is just another form of socialism although subsidizing corporations is OK.

Those were the days: Mitt Romney and Ted Kennedy
